The Washington State city of Dayton is the county seat of Columbia County and has a population of 2600. It was founded in the late 1860s, with Jesse and Elizabeth Day leading the planning of the town; hence it is named after Jesse Day. Fairs were held at Columbia County Fairground soon afterwards, with racing as part of the programme. The first evidence of harness races at Dayton Days was in 1888. The 4 furlong racetrack then extended the programme to include thoroughbred races and quarter horse racing, eventually launching its principal race for quarter horses, the Dayton Days Challenge Handicap. Interest waned over the next century until a final two day meeting took place on Sunday 30th May 2010 when the card consisted of thoroughbred and quarter horse races. |
